This year we decided that we would run prayer spaces on our school camp. Because of our students and their diverse learning needs and their personalities and their experiences as we are a very culturally diverse school, we wanted them to have an experience of God. We wanted our kids hearts to be impacted, that they would feel the presence of God, that God is living and he is not far from one of them and he could communicate with them.
We set up the large meeting hall and surrounding area with 12 prayer spaces for the Year 9 students to engage in. There was an incredible sense of calm as the students wandered between the spaces, engaging in the activities in a thoughtful and meaningful way. We were unsure how some of our more challenging students would engage but they really respected the calm atmosphere and appreciated the opportunity to just ‘be’.
As the prayer spaces on camp were such a success we have continued to create spaces throughout the year. One example was a ‘Sticker Bless Morning’ where the junior students left sticky notes of blessing all over the school.
We have since opened our Prayer Sanctuary Room on Fridays where senior students can engage in prayer. We have also started our before school Open Space. The space is set up with fairy lights, worship music and a selection of prayer space activities. Students are encouraged to come before school and start the day in prayer.
